The factory Ford alternator and voltage regulator used in the Pantera is a dated design and is problematic.The Ford voltage regulator is a electro-mechanical type that use relays contacts that switch current 50 to 200 times a second. As the relay contacts open and close, sparks are generated and erode the metal contacts. This causes the regulator function to eventually fail, possibly over-charging or under-charging the battery as well and supplying the electrical system with incorrect voltages. Battery charging voltage is absolutely critical for long battery life.The solution is to use an internally regulated alternator, the alternator of choice is the Si alternator due to it’s excellent design.
